An informal study on how the ESRB rates their games

Based on a quck look at my M-rated PS2 games, I think I have figured out the difference between "Violence" and "Intense Violence." Games with just plain old vanilla "Violence" (MGS2, Silent Hill 2, and Mafia) only contain gun/explosion violence. Games that carry the "Intense Violence" warning (God of War, MGS3, GTA: San Andreas), all include knives and swords. So there you have it, slitting somebodys throat is more intensely violent than just shooting them.
